Darcie’s Playhouse Makeover – Big Game Hunters

This blog is long overdue, I guess I’ll have to blame the unpredictable British weather for that. My painting and make over has been on and off due to the rain but now it’s done and it will provide years of play!

When we moved house 18 months ago I was so excited to finally have a garden! Me and Lee both grew up without a garden so it was very exciting to think of seating areas, sandpits, trampolines and I had my eye on different playhouses but they always seemed so expensive.

I came across Big Game Hunters also known as The Play Experts on Instagram and was looking at their Evermeadow House Playhouse. I loved seeing how everyone had put their own stamp on it and made it unique. I have all sorts of ideas and wanted to make them come to life!

I purchased the playhouse from Big Game Hunters and was impressed by the price at £114 it’s the cheapest wooden playhouse I’ve come across. Quality is not compromised as it is made from beautiful natural fir wood. It hasn’t been treated but that means you can paint it or varnish it.

The playhouse arrived and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. It didn’t take long for my husband to build it. The prefabricated panels are labelled and the Perspex window and the door are already in place. There is also a Perspex strip on the roof to stop water coming through in the middle, but if I’m honest I would’ve liked this to be a panel protecting the whole roof as water does get in still. We’re going to add roofing felt to make it waterproof.

You can also purchase the floor separately as well which consists of two wooden panels that slot inside.

Once it was built it was easy to lift and move to the space where we wanted it. It is the perfect size for any garden as the footprint is 105 width x 95 depth and it is the perfect height for small children at 126cm high. Darcie is just the right size to fit through the door but Archie, Maisie and Charlie have to duck to fit through the door. Charlie is able to stand up inside the playhouse and he is 5! Archie and Maisie are 7 and 9 and they fit inside and have lots of fun with Darcie!

Darcie was so impressed when she first saw it and that’s before there was anything inside! I couldn’t wait to get started on it!

I decided to paint it white with a grey door, windowsills and roof. I used outdoor paint from b&q and Lee was quite impressed with my painting skills. I get bored easily with painting but this was so fun and I was excited to see my vision come to life.

I tried to do this makeover on a budget, I got a butterfly door knob from b&q for £2. There is a double sided door knob with the playhouse making it easy for your child to open from the inside or outside. I also got a little latch for the door to stop it from swinging open in the wind, this was only £1.50 from Wilkos.

Now onto the fun stuff! I got a window box from Tiger for £3 and filled it with foam and artificial flowers from Poundland and Wilko, these cost around £5. I added a silver number 1 which was £2 on amazon, a wreath from The Range which was £4.99 I looked around on eBay and amazon for a wreath but this was the cheapest I could find and it’s a great size. I also wanted to add Darcie’s name to the playhouse, I struggled to find one on a budget but the one I got was from a small business for £10 and you can order it with or without holes. It’s acrylic so it will last a while! I ordered some fabric on amazon for £6 and my mum made some curtains and ties for me and finally I bought two lights from Poundland for £1 each.

I bet you’re thinking just show us the playhouse! Now that I’ve told you what I’ve done to it I think it’s time for the big reveal!

I am so in love with it! I think it looks so cute and inviting. But I didn’t stop there, I wanted to think of how I could make it special on the inside as well.

I added a small kitchen (this was tricky to find as I didn’t want it to take up the whole playhouse!), a little basket with books in it and a small chair with Darcie’s name on it. To finish it off I got an offcut of carpet from a local carpet shop for just £5! I think it looks perfect!

Darcie loves playing in her playhouse! This was so worth investing in, the time that went into it will be so worth the years of play to come!
