You’ve clicked this post because you have started a parenting blog or you want to start one. I often get questions about starting a Mummy Blog, how to do it and why I did it.
In this blog I’ll share any tips I’ve learned along the way and how to get started.
Starting your blog:
Start by thinking what you want to document and what is the purpose of your blog. For me I just wanted my little area to write and share my thoughts. I enjoy sharing experiences of motherhood and products I’ve tried and tested. It’s important to realise that reviews and freebies are a perk of blogging and won’t come instantly or naturally. I will talk about that again later.
So you want to start a blog, think about your name. This is your trademark as such. My name is “Life with the Busbys” on everything; my blog, Instagram and YouTube. This makes you more recognisable and companies can contact you on any platform.
I started my blog on WordPress, at first I used the free option but it’s not as customisable and I never really got into it. Now I have my own domain http://lifewiththebusbys.com instead of being WordPress hosted. I pay for this service and I think it’s something like £1.19 a month for the first year. There are also other hosts such as Blogger and Wix but I don’t know much about those.
The bonuses of having your own domain:
– it’s easier to remember your name
– it’s easier for people to find you
– it will come up in search engines
– it will increase your ranking
– if your blog is super successful you can use Google Adsense and other advertising techniques
What is a page ranking?
You may be wondering what a page ranking is and this is basically your Domain Authority and the higher this is the more recommended your site is and the more traffic you will get.
For example, Facebook has a DA of 100, the highest domain possible. A lot of companies will work with bloggers with a DA of over 20/25 etc.
Everyone starts with a DA of 1, to increase your DA there are many ways:
– write content which people will read, connect with and share on social media
– write content for other bloggers so you feature on their blogs (they will link to you)
– feature on other websites with a higher ranking
– take part in link ups – what this means is writing content for another blogger and they write content for you.
– comment and interact with other bloggers, support them and they will support you. You can also meet friends along the way!
So you are still reading and still curious about starting a blog!
What I would say is just go for it!!
I wish I started years ago, I could’ve documented my pregnancies, moving house, events like our wedding and holidays. It’s such a shame so I think if you want to start a blog or a YouTube channel then do it now! There is no time like the present.
Working with brands
I often get this question: how do you get freebies?
I am so grateful to companies for sending me things for “free” and we love trying out new products or being sent products from brands we love!
In all fairness the products are not free, there is an expectation to review them, to share photos on your social media, to explain your thoughts. This can take time and you want to do the product justice by taking good photos and writing good, honest content so your readers get an insight into what the product is like.
I think it’s important to realise that freebies won’t come quickly, you have to work hard by interacting with others, being social on social media platforms, sharing products you already love to demonstrate your capabilities and spend a lot of time and effort on your blog.
I also get asked about attending events. I absolutely love attending blogger events; I get to meet other bloggers, have a really fun day out, learn new information, eat good food and leave with a fab goodie bag. But blogger events wouldn’t be successful without bloggers! Companies are also so happy to have you there and are always so friendly. Usually I get invited to events via Instagram or my email address (which is on my contact me page on my blog and my instagram). Make life easier for people wanting to contact you by having links to email easy to find.
It is also good to get in touch with companies that you love and give them a heads up that you are a blogger and you love their products etc. If your baby is playing with a toy, tag the brand in the photo!
What are you waiting for?
I hope this blog has been helpful and I wish you the best of luck with your blog whether you have been doing it a while or starting up.
Also, pop your blog link in the comments below so we can support each other! I’d love to find some new blogs to read as well.
I am by no means an expert and I haven’t been blogging for that long but I just thought I’d share my thoughts and what I’ve learnt so far!
